A fine job indeed, Sir Roosevelt, for taking the time and patience in having you own Radio Shack Special come to life !
...your friend, Patrick
I had been
looking for a FM Receiver available in the store but I can't find
one. It always comes with an AM Receiver. Since I was just into
music, I searched the web for I might find one. Luckily, I landed
on this site and the journey began...
My attention was caught by the RSS because it is very small and the compeonents are just few which I believe will be done easily.
First, I had ask the stores for the parts of its availability. I had a problem looking for the MPF102, the store told me it's out of stock. I asked the replacement part but Patrick had told me stick to the parts listed. I had found one in another store.
Second, I had made my first PCBand had to
buy ny oww drill. At first I thought to use a prototype PCB but I
find a challenge to make my own PCB besides the protype is larger
than the actual size of the prescribed PCB.
Third, I soldered the component parts. In fact I mistakenly used a un-insulated copper wire for the drain capacitor so I have to but a another.
During my first turn on, I just heard a clear static. I was disappointed at first but I said to myself I have to find the culprit. With the help of Patrick who unselfishly answered my queries I had diagnosed the problem. I ommited the line going to the #3 pin of the LM386, hence if I get hold of the 10uF capacitor I can hear a music.
And finally after almost 2 weeks of
working on the unit, what I heard was surprise to me. I never had
expected to have such a simple fm radio with only one transistor
so sensitive and has a clear signal. I was also amazed that I can
even tune in to some AM stations. I had also discovered that If
want to make the reception of weak station, all you have to do is
to stretch or compress the drain coil until such time the
reception of the station becomes strong.
Indeed, I'm planning to have another unit next month. A salute to Sir Patrick for having such a great RSS !!!
...very truly yours, ROOSEVELT
